In the site Großes Veen the removal of trees and bushes in order to regenerate degraded dry heaths and neglected sand grasslands has begun. Emerging shrubs and bushes reduce the value of these important habitats for the keystone species sand lizard (Lacerta agilis), smooth snake (Coronella austriaca) and wood lark (Lullula arborea). Only by preventing these habitats from being overgrown by abundant bushes they can be maintained in the long run.
Unwelcome vegetation, especially scotch pine, was removed mechanically with brushcutter and chainsaw. This action will be pursued in further sites of the project area.
